Michael's Four Pillars of Financial Planning

Building a Strong Financial Foundation—One Pillar at a Time

PILLAR ONE

Where do you want your money to take you?

It's a simple question.

But it's one many people never stop to ask themselves.

Maybe your answer is retiring with confidence.

Maybe it's spending more time with your grandchildren.

Maybe it's taking the trip you've talked about for years, purchasing a lake home, helping your children or grandchildren with college or first home purchase, supporting causes close to your heart, or simply having the freedom to enjoy life without constantly worrying about money.

Whatever your answer, your financial goals are unique to you.

And every meaningful financial plan begins there.

Why Financial Goals Matter

Over the next couple months, I'd like to share the framework that guides the way I approach financial planning.

I call it Michael's Four Pillars of Financial Planning.

These four pillars aren't about chasing the next hot investment or reacting to every headline in the news. They're about building a financial foundation that can support the life you want to live—through every season of life.

Over the coming weeks, we'll explore each pillar and discuss why it matters.

We’re beginning with the first—and in many ways, the most important.

Financial Goals.

Every Financial Plan Starts With Financial Goals

One of the first questions people often ask me is,

"Where should I invest my money?"

It's a fair question.

But before we talk about investments, I like to ask a different question.

What do you want your money to accomplish?

Because until you know where you're going, it's difficult to know the best path to get there.

Your financial goals influence nearly every decision you'll make.

How much should you save?

How much investment risk is necessary or required?

When can you retire or break service?

How should you prepare for the unexpected?

The answers to those questions begin with understanding what matters most to you.

That's why Goal Setting is the first pillar in our Four Pillars of Financial Planning framework. It establishes the direction that helps guide every other aspect of your financial plan.

Your Financial Goals Should Reflect Your Life

One of the things I enjoy most about my work is hearing people's stories.

For some, success means retiring earlier than expected.

For others, it's making sure their spouse is financially secure.

Some want to travel while they're healthy enough to enjoy it.

Maybe it is having a retirement dream home with a pool.

Others dream of leaving something meaningful behind for their children, grandchildren, church, or favorite charity.

No two families are exactly alike.

That's why no two financial plans should be alike either.

Your plan should reflect your life, your priorities, your values, and your goals.

Turning Financial Goals Into a Financial Plan

Dreams are important.

But dreams without a plan often stay just that, dreams.

One way to begin is by turning broad ideas into specific goals.

Instead of saying,

"I'd like to retire someday."

Ask,

"What would retirement actually look like for me?"

Instead of saying,

"I want to save more."

Ask,

"What am I saving for?"

When your goals become specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound, they become easier to pursue with confidence. These SMART principles are also emphasized in our Four Pillars planning guide.

Your Financial Plan Should Grow With You

Life has a way of changing our priorities.

Children grow up.

Grandchildren arrive.

Careers evolve.

Retirement gets closer.

You mature out of your home.

Health changes.

New opportunities appear.

The financial plan that fit your life ten years ago may not fit your life today.

That's why financial planning isn't something you do once and put on a shelf.

It's a conversation that evolves as your life changes.

It All Starts With a Conversation

People are sometimes surprised that our first meeting isn't really about investments.

It's about listening.

What are you looking forward to?

What concerns you?

What would give you greater confidence about the future?

When we begin there, everything else starts to make more sense.

Because once your goals are clear, every financial decision has a purpose.

Before You Go...

Before making your next financial decision, pause for just a moment and ask yourself one question.

Where do you want your money to take you?

The answer may shape every financial decision that follows.

Next, we'll explore Pillar Two: Budgeting & Savings and how healthy financial habits today can help support the goals you've established for tomorrow.
